Learning to drive is an investment in your independence. At Dave Driving School, lessons are £40 per hour, with discounts available for block bookings. The DVSA says most learners need around 45 hours of lessons plus practice, which usually costs between £1,500–£2,000 in the UK. Everyone learns differently, so we’ll create a plan tailored to you. Ready to start your journey? Book today and take the first step towards your licence.

Before starting driving lessons, you need to hold a valid UK provisional licence. You’ll also need to meet the eyesight requirement: being able to read a number plate from 20 metres. Applying for your provisional licence is quick and easy via the DVLA website. Once your licence arrives, you can begin practical lessons straight away. If you’d like guidance on preparing for your first lesson, Dave Driving School is here to help with step-by-step support.

One of the most common questions learners ask is, “How many lessons will I need?” According to the DVSA, most learners take around 45 hours of professional tuition, plus 20 hours of private practice with family or friends. However, this is only a guide. Some learners may need fewer lessons, while others benefit from extra time to build confidence. At Dave Driving School, we assess your progress and create a personalised plan that gets you test-ready at your pace, not someone else’s.

Driving lessons at Dave Driving School cover all the essential skills you need to pass your test and drive safely for life. You’ll start with car controls and basic manoeuvres, then progress to junctions, roundabouts, dual carriageways, and independent driving. We also prepare you for parking manoeuvres, sat nav use, and hazard awareness. Each lesson builds on the last, helping you grow in confidence until you’re fully prepared for the practical test. With mock tests included, you’ll know exactly what to expect on the big day.

At Dave Driving School you’ll learn in a modern, dual-controlled car that’s fully insured for driving tuition. Dual controls mean your instructor can step in if needed, helping you feel safe while you build skills. The car is maintained to a high standard and kept clean and comfortable for every lesson. You’ll practise real-world driving: residential streets, busy junctions, roundabouts and dual carriageways where appropriate. We’ll also cover reversing manoeuvres, bay and parallel parking, and independent driving using sat nav. If you’re tall, petite or prefer a particular seating position, we’ll help you set up the cockpit (DSSSM routine) so mirrors, seat and steering are perfect for you. A safe, consistent car helps you learn faster — and it’s the vehicle most learners choose for mock tests and the practical test.

We know life happens. If you need to cancel or move a lesson, please give at least 48 hours’ notice. This lets us offer the slot to another learner and keeps things fair for everyone. Cancellations with less than 48 hours’ notice may be chargeable. To change a booking, send a quick text or WhatsApp to 07957 396557 and we’ll confirm the next available time. If we ever need to rearrange (e.g., severe weather or instructor illness), we’ll contact you promptly and offer an alternative. Tip: keeping a regular weekly slot helps you progress faster and makes scheduling easier. For test days, we’ll help with timings so you’re fresh, focused and on time.

Many learners don’t pass first time, and that’s okay. After the test we review your driving test report together so you clearly understand any faults (minors or serious). Then we create a targeted plan: extra practice on the exact skills that need work — whether that’s mirrors and MSM, roundabouts, speed awareness, meeting traffic, or parking accuracy. We also run mock tests under exam conditions so you know what to expect and can manage nerves. You can rebook your test on the official DVSA service (no third-party resellers). When the next date is set, we’ll schedule focused lessons so you go in confident and consistent. Progress isn’t always linear — but with the right feedback loop, your next attempt can be your best one.

However, you must pass the Theory Test before you’re able to book the practical test with DVSA. The Theory includes multiple-choice questions and hazard perception clips. We recommend revising little and often using DVSA-licensed materials and practising hazard perception regularly. During lessons we’ll reinforce key topics like MSM routine, speed limits, signs, and safe following distances to make theory more intuitive. On your first lesson you’ll also need to meet the eyesight requirement: reading a number plate from 20 metres (with glasses or contacts if needed). Need help with resources?
