Chilwell Driving Test Centre is one of the main driving test centres used by learners in Nottingham, Beeston, Chilwell, Stapleford, Long Eaton, Bramcote, Wollaton and surrounding areas.
Many learners find the local roads challenging because of busy roundabouts, tram areas, fast roads, changing speed limits, complex lane markings and traffic-controlled junctions.
This guide has been created using local driving instructor knowledge to help learners understand the types of roads, junctions and common problem areas that may appear during driving lessons or test preparation.
This is not an official DVSA route guide. It is local guidance designed to help learners become safer, more confident and better prepared drivers.
About Chilwell Driving Test Centre
Chilwell Driving Test Centre is based at Eldon Business Park and is used by many learners from Nottingham, Beeston, Chilwell, Stapleford, Long Eaton, Bramcote, Wollaton and surrounding areas.
The roads around Chilwell can include a mixture of residential streets, busy town centres, tram areas, multi-lane roundabouts, fast dual carriageways, country lanes and complex traffic-controlled junctions.
Because of this, learners need more than just basic car control. They need good planning, lane discipline, speed awareness, road sign awareness and the ability to stay calm when roads become busy or confusing.
Why Chilwell Test Routes Can Be Challenging
Learners often struggle around Chilwell because the area includes:
Busy multi-lane roundabouts
Tram routes through Beeston
Roads where signs and markings must be read early
Fast roads such as the A52
Speed limit changes that can catch learners out
Traffic-controlled junctions and yellow box junctions
Country lanes with bends, narrow sections and limited visibility
Areas where sat-nav information may be misleading
Roundabouts with missing or unclear lane markings
Common Serious Fault Areas Around Chilwell
Common serious faults around Chilwell can include:
Choosing the wrong lane at roundabouts
Drifting across lanes where road markings disappear
Following sat-nav instead of reading road signs
Missing speed limit changes
Blocking yellow box junctions
Poor positioning near tram areas
Late lane changes
Poor planning when exiting roundabouts
Not building speed correctly when joining faster roads
Driving too fast on country lanes
Beeston and Chilwell Hotspots
The Beeston and Chilwell area can be challenging because of tram routes, one-way systems, road signs, local traffic restrictions and busy town-centre driving.
This section should include areas such as Eldon Business Park, Nottingham Road, Middle Street, Regent Street, Beeston tram areas, High Road and Marlborough Road.
Learners need to read signs and road markings early, especially where tram-only routes, one-way systems and compulsory turns are involved.
Bramcote Island Hotspots
Bramcote Island is one of the most difficult local areas for many learners because of the number of lanes, signs, markings and different route options.
This section should include the different Bramcote Island approaches, including A52 Nottingham, A52 Derby, Ilkeston Road A6007 and Town Street.
The main focus should be lane choice, lane discipline, timing, road markings and not moving across too early or too late.
Bardills Roundabout Hotspots
Bardills Roundabout is a major traffic-controlled roundabout used on many local driving routes.
This section should include the Bardills approaches from Nottingham, Derby, Toton and Stapleford, including lane choice, speed traps, Park & Ride planning and joining faster roads.
Learners need to read the signs early, choose the correct lane, manage speed correctly and avoid being misled by sat-nav speed information.
M1 Junction 25 Hotspots
M1 Junction 25 is a major traffic-controlled roundabout with multiple lanes, traffic lights and fast-road approaches.
This section should include the Nottingham, Sandiacre, Long Eaton and A52 approaches, including traffic lights, lane markings, acceleration lanes and joining fast traffic.
Learners need to plan early, follow signs and markings, hold their lane and build speed safely when joining the A52.
Miller & Carter Roundabout Hotspots
Miller & Carter Roundabout can be challenging because of traffic lights, multiple lanes, fast approaches and lane discipline.
This section should include Derby Road A52, Woodside Road, Wollaton Vale, Brook Road planning and lane discipline.
Learners need to position early, follow their lane through the roundabout and plan ahead for parked vehicles or the next instruction.
Long Eaton and Breaston Hotspots
Long Eaton and Breaston include busy town-centre roads, small roundabouts, changing lane layouts and areas where learners can easily lose lane discipline.
This section should include Long Eaton town centre, Asda/Tesco roundabouts, Derby Road A6005, Wilsthorpe Road, Petersham Road and Breaston approaches.
Learners need to read lane signs early, maintain lane discipline and avoid cutting across roundabouts where there are no clear white lines.
Stapleford Hotspots
Stapleford has several areas where learners need good planning, especially around traffic lights, yellow box junctions and busy town driving.
This section should include Horse and Jockey traffic lights, yellow box junctions and Stapleford lane planning.
Learners need to remember that a green light does not always mean go if the exit is not clear.
Country Lane Hotspots
Some Chilwell routes may include country lanes such as Risley Lane and Breaston Lane.
These roads may have sharp bends, narrow sections, limited visibility and no centre white lines in places.
Learners should not treat the speed limit as a target. They should drive only as fast as they can safely see ahead and be prepared for large vehicles, horse riders and oncoming traffic.
Speed Limit Traps
Some local roads have changed speed limits or areas where sat-nav information may be wrong.
Learners must always follow the road signs, not the sat-nav.
This is especially important on roads where the limit may previously have been 40 mph but is now 30 mph.
Roundabout Lane Discipline
Many of the difficult areas around Chilwell involve roundabouts where lane markings can disappear or become unclear.
Learners must not cut across or “flatline” roundabouts just because there are no white lines.
The key is to choose the correct lane early, follow the natural curve and keep good lane discipline throughout.
